You may not be aware but U3A stands for the University of the Third Age. It is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a relaxed and friendly environment. There are local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. Local U3As are learning cooperatives, which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. In effect, the teachers learn and the learners teach.
The Wycliffe Lutterworth U3A was formed in 2007and currently has over 180 Members from a variety of backgrounds. General meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, presently at the Methodist Church Rooms in Lutterworth when the opportunity is taken to update members on current events and the activities of the learning/interest groups followed, usually, by a speaker. If you are interested in giving a talk to the monthly meeting, then you should contact the Chairman.
Several learning/interest groups have been formed by the membership and each group is coordinated and facilitated by a volunteer member. These groups meet at various times of the month in a variety of venues. All of the groups are very friendly so please do not hesitate to contact the coordinator for more information if you are interested in participating. We are always keen to expand our group base so if you have any particular interest or suggestions for a new group do not hesitate to let me or a member of the committee know.
The day to day running of the Club is in the hands of a Committee made up of the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Minutes Secretary, Interest Group Coordinator and two Club members.
A number of social events are organised throughout the year details of which are published as and when, examples being Christmas Lunch, summer outings, and garden visits.
