Report on the December meeting
The Wycliffe U3A finished the year in fine seasonal style. Instead of the normal monthly talk, a full programme of readings, singing and carols was put on by the ‘U3A Melodics’. After the usual tea, coffee and Christmas fayre, everyone settled down to be entertained. The whole morning went off without a hitch and involved everyone singing, the choir singing, a duet and a solo that had everyone in raptures. The readings were all of a light hearted nature but still on the Christmas theme. One was called ‘The Twelve Days of Turkey’. All were very popular. The singing from everyone had the usual carols as well as some, like ‘When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney’.
All in all, a great way to end the year.

10th December 2012
Christmas Meeting
There was a festive air on this December morning as we tried our hands at Call My Bluff, Black Magic, a Seasonal Quiz and other games. Refreshments reflected the time of year and a good time was had by all. It made a change to have general conversations rather than a particular discussion topic.
The topics which we covered during the 2012 were:
Should charities spend so much on publicity & giveaways and are there too many charities?
Should council tenants with 3 or more bedrooms be forced to move to smaller premises when they reach 65?
When the financial situation is so precarious should we be able to bid for sporting events such as the 2017 Athletics?
Was Mrs Thatcher Britain’s greatest post war prime minister, or was she ‘that awful woman’?
Which modern novels do you think should be considered literary classics?
What does the Jubilee mean to us?
Is positive discrimination in relation to age, gender, ethnic minorities etc. good or bad?
What makes a community?
Elected police commissioners are a good idea.
What would life be like now if Guy Fawkes had succeeded?
Please contact Dot Barnard if you would like to join the group in 2013.

BOOK CHAT
Co-ordinator
Mick Curtis
01455 554504
We met in December to discuss Writing Home by Alan Bennett.
Of the members present only one or two had actually managed to finish the book. We mostly felt that although the writer is very entertaining as a playwright and a performer this disparate collection of book reviews, diary entries, accounts of the process of staging some plays and other writings were too random to suit sitting down to read from cover to cover. This work is best treated as a 'dip into' book when the reader can extract selections which stand alone.
Only one person disliked the book outright, but although the book promoted much discussion, we felt we had read better.

Walk and Lunch 5th December 2012
On a chilly and icy morning 53, walkers (yes 53) and 2 dogs set out towards Shawell on wooded footpaths and field paths. The walk resembled a drunken snake and all the stiles were very slowly climbed due the covering of ice and wet moss. Very slippy. We all arrived back safely for our Christmas Lunch at Lutterworth Golf Club. With the arrival of our guests there was the staggering attendance of 71 diners. The meal, service etc. was once again superb. Thank you Rebecca and staff. We still have capacity for even more dinner guests (no need to walk) so next year come and join in the fun. A great day was enjoyed by one and all. The walk will be changed next year to avoid icy stiles but I'm sure the lunch will be as good as ever. Do come and join us. Thank you for your continued support.
