January 2014 Month bulletin
Filling the Church, the Wycliffe Lutterworth U3A met for the final time this year. After coffee and mincepies, all were entertained by a selection of seasonal readings , loosely based on “A Christmas Carol”. Dot, as narrator, linked the dialogue and musical interludes, whilst Liz ably accompanied the choir. This lighthearted romp was enhanced by the repartee between Scrooge (our own Mayor Bob) and our affable chairman Eddie, the ghost of Christmas. The small choir led the singing , which eventually convinced “Scrooge” to distribute largesse (chocolate coins) in the true spirit of Christmas. We wish everyone a very “Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year”
Christmas is a-coming the turkey’s getting fat, .
Trees bedecked with tinsel a welcome on the mat.
Christmas is a-coming the season of good cheer
Mince pies in abundance to relish, as last year.
Christmas is a-coming too fast for most of us
Youngsters dream of presents, ignoring all the fuss
Christmas is a-coming but Scrooge is far from glad
His miserable existence is mean and cold and bad.
Christmas is a-coming with carolers at the door.
Could songs and poems cheer him give him joie de vivre once more?
Christmas is a-coming with messages in verse Could this be the turning point? Oh no. He’s getting worse!
Christmas is a-coming with joy the rafters ring As in “A Christmas Carol old Scrooge agrees to sing. Christmas is a-coming with chocolate coins as treasure We wish you all a “Great New Year full of fun and pleasure”

The book this month was The Blood Detective by Dan Waddell.
The book was a crime novel with the twist of crimes being copied from the past and introducing a family history aspect to the case. (Think television series, Whitechapel).

Wednesday 27th November 2013 – The Crossed Khukris Gurkha Restaurant, Nuneaton.
We had a lot of discussion about how we would do the ordering with 13 people present. However, I had omitted giving the Restaurant the 2 days’ notice they needed to order in the free Cake! SO – Mr Om suggested that he do us a Special Deal - £14 each for the 13 of us and free Tea or Coffee to finish. The speed with which we accepted caused him to laugh and say that he must have made the price too low! He then established what sort of selection we would like and how hot we would like the dishes and said he would cater for the Vegetarian Diner in the party.
We started off with the usual Poppadoms and Chutneys and then were each served with our own plate of Assorted Starters – with a special plate for our Veggie, who was also happy to eat the Salmon provided in the Third Course when we were served the selection of dishes requested – Lamb, Beef, Chicken and Salmon in a variety of sauces + dishes of rice and vegetables. Ample for all.
Everyone said that they had had a really splendid evening, helped by the welcome we received from the Proprietor and his staff. Half those present were newcomers to the Group and this meant that they really had to talk to each other and not stick to sitting with and talking to people they already knew! The atmosphere was further enhanced by the fact that one of the newcomers had been in the Royal Air Force and knew the locations where Mr Om had been stationed when in the Gurkhas.
Interested? Go to their Website - www.omsrestaurant.com or telephone them on 024 7634 4488 Need to know how to find the Restaurant? Ring me or e-mail me.

Tuesday 12 November 2013 - We went to Nemo’s Bar Diner, Stoney Cove, Stoney Stanton
Between Google and our Sat Navs we eventually found the site! It is a long time since I was last there and not only has the entry access changed but there is now a three-storey building where I expected to find Nemo’s Bar! We received a warm welcome and were well looked after. They have a Regular Menu as well as a Specials Board. The sun shone and the surroundings were picturesque. A place to go back to in Spring or early Summer.
In case the weather is dire this winter I suggest that for January, February and March we stick to going to Palmers Garden Centre, Ullesthorpe, on the third Tuesday.

POETRY GROUP
Angela and Stuart Rhodes have recently informed of their intention to step down, with immediate effect, from the co-ordination and hosting of the Poetry Group. This is as a result of their current health situation. They have co-ordinated the Poetry Group for the last five years and it is testimony to their personal effort that the group has developed and flourished during that time.
I am sure that the other members of the Group will be saddened to hear that Angela and Stuart are unable to continue your role and would want me to thank them, on their behalf, for all their efforts over the past five years and to wish them a speedy return to full health.
Having spoken to other members of the Poetry Group I have been informed that it is the intention to continue and discussions are currently taking place regarding its future organisation. Details will be published in the Bulletin in due course." Eddie.

TRIP TO GLOUCESTER.
A bit of advanced notice, I am planning a day trip to Gloucester on Friday May 9th 2014. The Docks, museums and the Cathedral are worth a visit and there are boat trips on the river. A Designer Outlet shopping centre is near the docks for the bargain hunters. At this stage I envisage everyone doing their own thing, but I can arrange a group tour of the Cathedral but that will depend on numbers. It may be possible to have a couple of drop off points but those joining the trip should be prepared to make their own way between points of interest, the docks and cathedral are about half a mile apart.
I will put out a signing up sheet with costs, timings and local pick-up details at the February meeting.
