November 2012 Month bulletin
Report on the October meeting
This month’s meeting was given by Sam Downs of Dodds and Co solicitors from Leicester. The topic was legal advice for ‘older clients’. Several members thought this would be rather dry subject but Samantha Downs did give some amusing examples. She covered what needs to be done during ones lifetime then went on to wills. Everyone was interested in this particularly when they had to guess the shortest valid will. This in fact turned out to be just three words long “all to mother” that was witnessed and written on an egg, although it was not clear whether this was a normal hens egg or perhaps something larger.
Sam left several informative leaflets that were around at the end of an amusing and instructive talk

Trip to Lincoln Cathedral
A group of 30 set off from Lutterworth and arrived in Lincoln in just over 90 mins thanks to the improvements made to the A46 trunk road. In the cathedral refectory we had time for a leisurely cuppa and a trip to the award winning loos before being divided into two groups to enjoy a very informative tour of the cathedral. Both guides were very knowledgeable and were happy and able to answer all our questions. After our tour we emerged into the warm sunshine of The Cathedral Quarter and had time on our own to have lunch in one of the local eateries and explore other parts of Lincoln. The city has more to offer and perhaps in the future we will go again to visit The Castle or do the Cathedral Roof Tour?

Our book for October was Regeneration by Pat Barker, the first in a trilogy. The novel is set in Craiglockhart War Hospital near Edinburgh, which treated officers suffering shell shock and mental traumas brought ahoy by their experiences in the trenches of WW1. This book is unusual in that it mixes real people with fictitious characters. The hospital and the doctors depicted were all real as were Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, the WW1 poets, who were patients at Craiglockhart. The other patients in the book were 'half invented' as although their names are fictitious, their histories have been based on real cases recorded by William Rivers, the doctor treating shell shock victims at the hospital. The stories of the suffering of these men are almost too painful to read and give this book an almost visceral punch. The style of writing is spare and powerful and suits the subject matter. Not all the characters are based on real people. Billy Prior is the most important invented character and goes on to feature more prominently in the subsequent volumes of the trilogy. Having recreated a world rather than inventing it, the novelist needs licence to see it from an angle that no amount of historical research could provide. Billy Prior gives her that angle.
Members found the book powerful, a good read, but not all felt comfortable with the subject matter.

October Meeting
Ten of us watched “The Well-digger’s Daughter” at Pearl and Tony’s house, with Daniel Auteuil in a story by Marcel Pagnol, set in Provence. In this French romantic drama the eldest daughter of a well-digger returns home from Paris when the first shots of World War I are fired. When she falls pregnant to a fighter pilot from a wealthy family her father is torn between his sense of honour and love for his daughter as a rift between the two families develops.
I think we all enjoyed this film.
The next meeting is on 22 November.
LIVELY DISCUSSION

Lively Discussion 8th October 2012
Elected police commissioners are a good idea.
Unusually at a Lively Discussion, everyone was against this idea. This topic was very difficult to research, since most of the information available was about how to stand as a candidate, rather than the substance of the role, even though elections take place on 15th November. It was felt that there has been indecent haste and political manoeuvring to bring this about. No-one could remember this being part of any manifesto or its passage through parliament, although Nick Clegg delayed the elections from May.
The major concerns were:
The politicisation of policing
Costs being in excess of those already established with police authorities
It’s from the USA and we don’t need it here
Information will be available online - paper copies will only be sent out by request. This disenfranchises anyone who doesn’t have access to a computer.
The Electoral Reform Society predicts a very low turnout – possibly only 18.5%, so how could anyone claim to have a mandate? In early October the media were reporting that most of the population knew nothing about these elections and given the limited information and access to it, how could any election be free and fair? There are 3 candidates in Leicestershire and Rutland - one Conservative, one Labour and an independent. Candidates from other parties are standing elsewhere. Elections take place in 41 areas, excluding London as elected mayor Boris Johnson is the, de facto, police and crime commissioner (PCC).

October Walk: This was one of the best walking days we have had for a long time and obviously everyone else thought so as 32 walkers turned up at The King’s Head in Smeeton Westerby. Unfortunately Reg had injured his foot on holiday and was unable to lead the walk but I was volunteered and given the map and detailed directions. Across the fields towards Saddington and then up quite a steep hill to get lovely views of the reservoir, we then followed the ridge to Gumley stopping on the way for our coffee at the highest point. From Gumley we then crossed the fields back to Smeeton. Most stayed for an enjoyable lunch in the pub. Thanks to Reg for organising the walk and for kindly buying me a drink for leading it.

October Walk
On a grey morning 22 walkers set off from the Golden Shield pub in Fleckney following a field path and footpaths to leave the village. The route took us through fields, sometimes muddy, and tracks to Wistow Rural Centre where we had a short coffee break. From here, we made our way to the Grand Union Canal passing Wistow Church on the way. Although the grey weather stayed with us on the walk, the autumn colours along the canal reflected in the water made this section very attractive. Leaving the canal at Crane's Lock, field paths were followed back to Fleckney where lunch was enjoyed.

The bird watching group had a very pleasant outing this month to Attenborough Nature Reserve near Nottingham. The weather was cold but bright and we saw several Egyptian geese on the lakes and several waterbirds including goldeneye. shoveler, tufted ducks, wigeon and a red-crested Pochard - a somewhat rare visitor to this country. The reserve has an excellent cafe and shop overlooking one of the lakes and we enjoyed coffee and lunch there after a good walk around the reserve. Our next outing is on Friday, 30th November - location to be advised.

Despite having limitations children's poetry highlighted a surprising number of poets.
Edith Blyton featured prominently. However poems by many other poets (including quite surprisingly) Spike Milligan were also read. All agreed that poetry should contribute to a child's education. However poems should be understood by the child and be pertinent to life.
Many of us considered that all too frequently during our time at school this objective was not achieved and indeed moved us away (albeit temporarily) from the joys of poetry. However thanks to U3A our interest has now been rekindled with all members looking forward to the fourth Thursday of each month.
Our November meeting will be devoted to poetry associated primarily with Comedy. Hopefully part of the session can be devoted to Lyrics which was to be the subject at our aborted August meeting.
